Fundraising Guidelines

Fundraising
Fundraising is an organised activity or process designed to secure additional funds, often for a particular project or purpose.

Sponsorship
Sponsorship is when one entity finances a project or an event carried out by another person or group in return for goods and services that benefit the financing entity.

Sponsorships are often confused with donations
A donation is a gift of product or cash with little or no expected return. Our definition of donation is ‘free money’ with no strings attached, and no return of benefits or favors expected. But sponsorships require the return of benefits or favors.

What are donations?
• Donations are items, money or time given by the pure generosity of interested people.
• A donation is the act of giving to a fund or cause.
• Gifts made voluntarily, given in support and generosity, sometimes tax deductible.
• Donations are either tax deductible or non-tax deductible. Essentially, only donations are tax-deductible.
• The donor does not receive any direct material benefit from the act of giving the money.

Money’s raised – What now?
The Nicholas Trust accepts money via any of the following forms:
• Cash
• Cheques or money orders
• Credit Card

Providing Temporary Receipts
People giving donations or purchasing tickets etc are entitled to receive a receipt.

It is a good idea for you to complete the details on the receipt at the time you receive the money so you will have a record to consult at a future date.

• Date money received
• $ amount
• Name of donor/purchaser
• Address of donor/purchaser
• Signature of the program participant issuing the receipt (ie You)
• Description of the payment (eg donation or raffle ticket purchase)

The donor cannot use the temporary receipts issued by you to claim tax-deductibility. Official tax-deductible receipts will be issued directly to the donor by the Nicholas Trust once Trust received the money.

Each time you submit a tax-deductible donation, we ask it is posted or delivered to the NICHOLAS BUTTERS TRUST.

Records
Keep your own receipts for verification. The Nicholas Trust will keep it’s own records as to how much is being passed, but please do not rely on having access to this information.
